Thức ăn ưa thích của ốc bươu vàng là xà lách, mạ non, rau muống… đặc biệt là mạ dưới 3 tuần tuổi. Chúng thường ẩn mình dưới bùn, bờ ao, hồ. Về đêm, chúng ngôi lên mặt nước cắn ngang thân lúa gây thiệt hại nghiêm trọng trên đồng ruộng với diện tích lớn. Theo nghiên cứu, một con ốc có thể ăn từ 2-3m2 diện tích lúa. Và mật độ 7-10 con ốc trên 1m2 thì cách đồng lúa của người nông dân có khả năng mất trắng. Chưa kể, loài ốc này có thể sống từ 2 – 3 năm trong điều kiện khắc nghiệt rất tốt. Chúng sinh trưởng và phát triển cực nhanh. Mỗi con ốc đẻ từ 10 – 12 ổ trứng, mỗi ổ khoảng 100 – 300 trứng và nhanh chống nở ra ốc non để kế thừa việc phá hoại mùa màng của mẹ.
